Lessons from the ancient Greeks :
How to balance your composition by strategic
placement of main focal points.  You control the visual dynamic for viewer eye circulation, resulting in a more professional-appearing design.  This helps to develop a "critical eye" and leads to an understanding of the difference between good compositions, and mediocre ones.

"Portraiture: Getting the Likeness from the Inside Out"

6 hour workshop $100
Medium:  Charcoal
Limited to 5 students

Gregory Graham Grant will teach this traditional approach used by history's best portrait artists.  Working from a live model, students will learn to
utilize existing visual maxims as a means to ascertain proper facial proportions.   Other topics covered
are lighting, posing the model, and charcoal materials/technique.

Back to Basics III:
"Expressive Figure Drawing"

6 hour workshop $150
Medium:  Charcoal or Graphite
Limited to 5 students

Working from the live nude model, students will learn
how to utilize the head as a visual maxim to establish
correct proportions.  Traditional gesture and contour
methods will be emphasized to help develop the "sprezzatura", or rough sketch, after which "modeling" of the form with shadows and highlights will produce the tonal quality of classic "true-to-life" form.

Back to Basics IV:
"Portraits in Pastel"

6 hour workshop $100
Medium:  Soft Pastels
Limited to 5 students

Students will learn how to develop control over soft pastels to create plausible skin tones.  Subtle color nuance is emphasized from direct and ambient light sources when working from a live model. This workshop is for intermediate to advanced students who have already learned how to measure the face and can get some semblance of a likeness.  Students are introduced to various working surfaces, such as textured pastel papers, textured mat board, and velour paper.

Back to Basics V:
"The Draped Figure:  Understanding Drapery Folds by Understanding Anatomy"

6 hour workshop $100
Medium:  Charcoal
Limited to 5 students

Students will work from the live draped figure in learning how drapery reacts to resistance.  Learn how master painters and sculptors created the illusion of form underneath folds of drapery.  Dramatic lighting will be used to help students delineate value patterns in contributing to overall visual dynamics.
